About Scotland
Scotland is a country in the north of Britain. People have lived here for thousands of years. They fished, farmed, and built with stone.
Later they had kings and queens. They spoke Pictish, Gaelic, Scots, and English. We are not sure how Pictish sounded.
In 1603 Scotland and England began to share a king. In 1707 their parliaments joined. Scotland kept its own laws and its own churches.
In the Highlands, many families had to leave their homes. That happened over many years. It was not one afternoon. People still sing about it.
Women and men both shaped the land. Queens ruled. Doctors, poets, and scientists changed daily life. Runners and drivers made new kinds of fame.
Today Scotland has its own parliament again. It opened in 1999. It meets in Edinburgh. It decides many things. The UK Parliament still decides others.
Cities, islands, and glens are full of people making new work, songs, and science. The story is still going.
