James VI became king of Scots as a baby.

His mother was Mary, Queen of Scots.

In 1603 the English queen Elizabeth died.

James was her nearest heir. He became king of England too.

Scotland and England shared a king from 1603.

People in England called him James I. Scotland still had its own laws.
